Want to know how you can get your first sign-up in your network marketing business?
Here in this post, I’ll share some tips on how you can do it.
Thankfully at the time, I didn’t do any of the shady stuff that network marketers tend to do today. Social media was just starting at that time too. This is what I did to get my first sign-up, I simple, told my immediate friends and family (my warm market) what I was doing. I didn’t say anything fancy either. That’s right to get your first sign-up you should tell your friends and family about your new business. Once you’ve told your friends and family, you’ll need to learn how to tap into your cold market.
How To Reach Out To Family And Friends
The first thing I’d suggest is don’t be so hung up if your family or friends join or not. Just like any other prospect you don’t want to pitch them instead, see if you can build some curiosity or see if they are open.
Here is how I handled reaching out to people I knew, I would say, “Hey, I just got involved in the awesome business, I’d appreciate it if you would take a look and let me know your thoughts.”
If they said no, I would say, “ok no problem at all.”
I never did any convincing, chasing or begging of people to check out my business. I would ask to see if they would take a look, if not ok on to the next.
If they said yes, I would get them on a presentation and let them check it out.
Tip: Always use a tool to expose people to your business.
I did have people circle back around at a later date and asked about the business I was doing. So don’t count people all the way out. It could be the wrong timing in their life. Things change all the time.
So if someone tells you no, don’t burn that bridge by getting upset or bugging the crap of them. That will turn them off altogether.
Bugging and chasing people are part of the reason network marketing has such a bad reputation with people. Don’t be that person.
You could have the best business in the world, and most people still won’t join you.
Network marketing is a numbers game.
What If You’ve Pitched Your Warm Market Already
I’ve learned to NOT lead with the business but instead lead with the product.
You could say something along the lines of, “Hey, I know this business won’t be a fit for you, but I think you might like the product.”
This line works great if you’ve hit your warm market with a bunch of spammy stuff in the past. It’s a different approach they won’t be expecting from you.
If they agree to take a look, again use a tool to show the product. They’ll also get exposed to your business which could pique their interest in doing it.
Cold Market Prospecting Tips
At some point, you will get to the end of your friends and family list. From here you’ll need to learn how to tap into your cold market.
Here are a few quick tips for you.
- Change your mindset. You need to start thinking like you are doing the interview. You’re interviewing your prospects to see if their dreams are worth your time.
- Use A Tool to do the explaining. This creates duplication because anyone can play a DVD, not everyone wants to give a fancy presentation or pitch.
- Fill up your pipeline. It will take several exposures for someone to join your business. So talk to as many people as possible.
- Get organized. Use a CRM to keep track of your prospects and the conversations you have with them.
- Say less to more people. You just want to see if they are open. If they are, see my second tip above.
Where Are The Best Places To Prospect
If you are doing it offline, the best place to prospect is while you’re out living life.
At the grocery store, the gym a social function.
Your main job with prospecting is seeing if they are open, NOT pitch them.
Be cool, if they ask you what is it just tell them you’ll follow up with them later and share all the details.
If you’re prospecting online, Facebook is a great place to connect with people. Any social media platform would work.
Don’t be a rookie network marketer and spam all your contacts and don’t send unsolicited messages.
Think numbers. If someone says no, don’t hang around, say ok cool and thank them for their time and get out of there. Move on to the next person.
How You Can Generate Leads For Free
You don’t need any money to get started with generating leads. All you need is the cell phone in your pocket and the right mindset.
The first thing you need to do is figure out your target audience. Who would best benefit your product or service?
And make sure you’re immersed in your niche.
If your blog is about skateboarding, it’ll be tough coming up with content if you don’t own a skateboard or never go skateboarding.
For me, I have a network marketing blog, so it only makes sense that I will be building a network marketing business.
I share things that I am learning on my journey. I read books, attend webinars and I buy courses and products.
I have an audible subscription that cost me a few bucks a month. I listen to audio books while I’m at the gym or driving in my car.
I make blog post and videos from the training I attend and the books and courses that I purchase. Also, I get content from the questions my leads and coaching clients ask me.
Going live on Facebook or Instagram would be the fastest way to get leads for your business. It’s not a good long term strategy though.
That’s where blogging is king in my opinion.
Blogs stay out there forever and work for you 24/7. Facebook lives disappear into the internet after a few days, sometimes a few hours.
And social media content is not searchable.
That means someone can google search a question and your Facebook live comes back, but your blog post or video that you’ve uploaded to YouTube can.
How To Almost Guarantee Nobody Joins Your Business
Just use all types of hype in your message. Say things like,
- Company has no competition.
- Company has zero debt.
- Ground floor opportunity.
- Easy and fast money.
- No talking to people
Just use any of the above languages in your marketing message and see how many people recruit using that strategy.
And in the event that you do recruit someone using this message, they’ll probably quit as soon as they realize what you told them is not true.
Be upfront with people, let them know network marketing is going to take a lot of hard work and time. Set realistic expectations.
How To Convince Someone To Join
You don’t ever want to convince someone to join your business. I never do.
It takes way to much energy trying to change someone’s mind instead you want to look for people who interested or open.
Usually what happens, when someone tells you no the amateur network marketer goes into convincing mode by saying things like,
When someone tells a professional network marketer no, they simply say thanks for your time and keep it moving.
You want it to make it their idea to join you.
Asking questions and becoming a problem solver is how you do it.
For example, when someone tells me what they do for a living, I’ll say something along the lines of “oh you must love doing that?”
Sometimes they’ll say yes they love what they do or sometime they’ll say they hate it.
When someone says they hate it, that’s how you can transition to your business and see if they are at least open.

Conclusion
Whether it’s getting your first rep signed up into your business or making you first lead online both of them are going to be the most significant milestones in your business.
If you just joined your first network marketing company, hit up your family and friends and at least let them know what you’re doing.
If they so no to joining your business maybe they could support you buying a product.
It never hurts to ask, and if you don’t ask the answer will always be no.
Family and friends are not a good long term approach, but learning attraction marketing would be.
